J. Testing the Contact Breaker
- Is the terminal
F securely "earthed" to the engine by means of
a short cable?
- Is the condenser S securely fixed to the "earth"
conducting strip G?
- Do the clip P and the spring I hold the contact arm
J firmly in position?
- Is the contact arm J itself intact and free from
any crack?
- Do the contacts close when the slipper L on the
arm is over the flat of the cam M? The slipper should be
clear of the cam to allow the contacts to close.
- Do the contacts open when the slipper is on a
point of the cam? The opening should be just sufficient
to receive the thin steel gauge on the special spanner.
An ordinary visiting card is of approximately the same
thickness.
If it is impossible to make the above investigation by
moving the timing lever Y (page 46),
the engine must be turned by hand sufficiently to bring
the cam into suitable positions.
