THE DAIMLER DUAL IGNITION SYSTEM.

The Daimler dual ignition system provides two separate sources of ignition, one being the magneto and the other the battery-coil. Both operate on the same set of plugs and through the same distributor and contact breaker. The change-over is effected by a switch on the instrument board (Fig, 1).

The timing mechanism, which is the same for both systems, includes a governor that provides automatic advance with increasing engine speed. A hand timing lever is also provided and it is particularly important that this lever should be used correctly.

The correct positions of the lever are as follow:

Full Advance (Fig. 2)

(a) For starting up on either battery or magneto.
(b) For running on the magneto up to 20 m.p.h.

Three Notches Retard (Fig.3)

(a) For all normal running on the battery.
(b) For running on the magneto above 25 m.p.h.
(N.B. On some models, this position is marked "run")

Running on magneto above 20 m.p.h. - Retard with increasing speed and vice versa, but it is essential that the lever should remain in the normal running position i.e. about three notches retard, for all speeds above 25 m.p.h. otherwise misfiring may occur through the automatic advance going beyond the available timing range, which is limited on any magneto.

Running on Battery. As the available timing range on battery ignition is unlimited, the exact position of the lever is relatively unimportant. Three notches retard gives what is normally the best running position, but it may be advanced for very high speeds if better results are obtained.

(N.B. If the engine knocks, the lever should, of course, be retarded whether running on the battery or the magneto.)
