P. Testing Coil or Magneto when one only is at fault.
- If one system only is fault and the contact breaker,
distributor and plugs are in order, the fault lies either:-
(a) In the primary circuit up to the contact breaker
or
(b) In the secondary circuit up to the distributor.
Q. To test Primary Circuit up to the Contact Breaker.
- Coil Ignition System. Does the ammeter show about
4 amps discharge with the engine stationary and the
switch at "coil" and the contacts closed? If
the ammeter is at zero turn the engine slightly to close
contacts. If the ammeter is still at zero be sure that
the contacts are closed, otherwise the fault lies either
in a loose connection or in the coil. If the ammeter
shows much more than 4 amps discharge, a faulty coil is
indicated, but in this case it is unlikely to cause
complete stoppage of the engine although it may be the
cause of unsatisfactory running.
R. Testing the Secondary Circuit up to the Distributor.
- If the primary circuit is in order, the fault lies
in the secondary circuit up to the distributor. Confirm
this by removing the wire from the terminal marked "D"
on the change over switch. Attach a spare sparking plug
to terminal D by means of a spare wire and place the plug
in such a position that its points can be observed when
turning the engine. The body of the plug must be in
contact with the metal of the engine and the points clear.
The absence of a spark confirms the fault being in the
secondary circuit. Before condemning the coil or the
magneto armature, be sure that the wires and
connections are intact and inspect the change-over switch.
