Second sportshall competition

The second match in the sportshall league takes place on Sunday 18 November at Telford Tennis Centre, TF2 7AB – by the athletics track. There is plenty of parking but again, no seating, so spectators might want to bring folding chairs. Athletes should arrive at 1.30 for a 2pm start.

This is an invitation event and cards/ e mails will be going out – please let the club know asap whether you can or cannot attend.

There is a chance to get selected to represent Shropshire at regional sportshall competitions in February.

Good luck to all our athletes.

Bridgnorth cross country results

It was unseasonably warm and sunny at Bridgnorth on 21 October and we had a good turnout of athletes. It was great to get teams of U11B and U13B – fantastic running by all of them – although our older boys remain thin on the ground,

Our six U11G had a good afternoon, taking 1st place on the day and putting themselves in contention for a medal, with Thea coming 3rd. The U13G and U17W strengthenedĀ their second positions. The U15G sadly didn’t have a team, but Beth triumphed once again.

The girls are well on course to retain their overall title – but we need everyone out for the last two races. We’re currently lying in 3rd in race for overall club Ā – an improvement on our standings last year.

The next cross country takes place at Meole Brace school on 11 November. This is a new venue – more details nearer the time.

Finally, congratulations to Emily for taking the Y7G title in the Telford Schools Cross Country League, and Edith and Louix who were Y10/11 runners up.

Sportshall results

The first match of the SYAL sportshall league was held on Sunday 14 October at Bridgnorth. There were individual wins for Wilf, Raef, Lucy and Emily. The U11B and U13G came 2nd, U11G and U13B came 3rd, leaving both the boys and girls in joint 3rd overall and the club fighting it out for second behind runaway leader Bridgnorth. Everyone struggled to find U15B, with one of the smallest fields ever, and a number of clubs didn’t get full teams out (losing significant points in the relay, as well as in individual events).
Full results, as always, are available at http://www.theorchard.clara.net/

The next match is on 18 November at the Telford Tennis Centre at Oakengates.

Second SYAL cross country

The second cross country of the season takes place this Sunday, 21 October, at Oldbury Wells School Bridgnorth WV16 5JD. There’s plenty of parking at the school and the races take place on the playing fields at the rear, and in an adjoining (quite rough and hilly!) field. We really need EVERYONE to run – it would be fantastic to retain our Girls’ title and there are plenty of team medals which are easily within our reach.

Race distances and times are as before:

1.00 U11G 1500m
1.15 U11B 1500m
1.30 U15G 3000m and U17W 4000m
1.55 U13B 3000m
2.15 U15B 4000m and U17M 5000m
2.40 U13G 2000m

You just need to arrive for your race (with enough time to warm up and walk the course). Club vests required but no numbers (except U17s). Look out for Dean and Matt and the group of blue hoodies. Come along and enjoy the unique camaraderie of cross country!

First sportshall competition

The first sportshall competition will take place at Oldbury Wells School, Bridgnorth WV16 5JD on Sunday 14 Oct at 2pm (but please get there for 1.30, so we can finalise teams etc).

Invitation cards and emails will be going out, so please let us know asap if you are available or not.

You need to compete in a club vest. There is plenty of parking on site but usually a lack of seating, so you might want to consider a folding chair/ cushion!

Lilleshall cross country results

The first of the SYAL cross country races was held at Lilleshall on Sunday 16 September. We had some great results, especially in the older age groups, but we could also do with more runners!
Wilf and Oliver need support in the U11B.
Thea, Ella and Sara need another runner in the U11G.
John, Oscar and Archie are still a man down in the U13B.
Sadly we had no U15B at all.
All of those age groups have a chance of sneaking into the top three if we can just persuade someone else to run. Anyone looking for inspiration should think of Hester – she competes knowing she is not a distance runner, and – she would probably say – hating every minute of it, but without her the U17W would be in 6th place, not 2nd. We need more Hesters!

The U13G (Emily, Leonie, Lucy, Aimee, Ophelia and Lois) had a full team and runners to spare and were rewarded with second place.
The U15G (Beth, Rebecca and Eva) also benefited from a complete team, with their third, as did the U17M (Louix, Sam and Archie).
The U17W (Edith, Manali and Hester) are lying in second.

There was also individual success: Beth took the U15 race with ease and Edith finished a strong 2nd in the U17W.

The next races are on 21 October at Bridgnorth. There are team medals available for all age groups at the end of the season and we are also defending Girls Champions, so it would be great to get full teams (and more) out.

Lilleshall cross country Sun 16 Sept

The first SYAL cross country race of the season is this Sunday at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. The Centre is quite hard to find if you’ve never been before. It is well signposted from the A518 Newport road but if travelling to the centre using Satellite Navigation they advise you to use the postcode TF10 9LQ.

There is plenty of parking but it is some distance from the actual course, so please allow enough time to get there, park and walk, as well as to warm up and walk the course. The course itself is quite rough and uneven – tricky underfoot, especially if we have a week of unsettled weather. If you’re wearing spikes it’s probably a good idea to put longer cross country ones in (they can be easily ordered online). Please also remember to wear club vests.

You only need to turn up in time for your race (details below) – there are no numbers (except for U17s) or official registration. Dean and Matt will be around and at the end you will be given a number to hand into someone from Wenlock to record your position.

It would good to see plenty of blue vests out, to get the season off to a good start. Good luck to all our runners.

The Telford Schools Cross Country races also start this week, and a number of Olympians will be running for their schools – best wishes to all of them.

Autumn competition dates

Cross country
We compete in 4 SYAL cross country races, in the same U11, U13, U15 and U17 age groups as the summer. There are individual and team medals for the top three in the league, as well as trophies for overall girls, boys and club. Last year the girls had a particularly good season and it would be fantastic to use that as a springboard for greater success this year.

Any club member can compete, without an invitation, and with cross country it definitely is ‘the more the merrier’. Even if you don’t see yourself as a distance runner on the track, going the distance in the winter will improve your overall fitness and it’s the one time when you can really enjoy being part of a team.

The races are on the following dates:
16th Sept 2018 – Lilleshall
21st October 2018 – Bridgnorth (Oldbury Wells)
11th November 2018 – Shrewsbury (Meole Brace)
2nd December 2018 – Wenlock

and they are always these times and distances:
1.00 U11G 1500m
1.15 U11B 1500m
1.30 U15G 3000m and U17W 4000m
1.55 U13B 3000m
2.15 U15B 4000m and U17M 5000m
2.40 U13G 2000m

Full details of venues, parking etc will be given out and posted online before each event. You can simply turn up (giving yourself enough time to look at the course) and run – vests needed but no numbers (except for U17s). If you want any more information, please speak to Dean or Matt at training.

Sportshall
There are four competitions in the Shropshire Young Athletes League, for the same age groups (but no U17s). Trophies for the best girls and boys team in each age group, as well as overall boys, girls and club are awarded after the final match.

We are restricted to two athletes per event, so athletes are invited to compete with e mails and cards going out before each match. There are different disciplines at each meeting, so don’t assume that if you aren’t selected for the first, you won’t be competing at all.

We are traditionally quite strong in sportshall but we need full teams if we’re to do well. Again, full details of venues, times etc will be given out before the events, but please put the following in your diaries:
14th October 2018 – 2pm – Bridgnorth
18th November 2018 – 2pm – Oakengates
13th January 2019 – 10am – Wenlock
10th February 2019 – 2pm – Oswestry

Congratulations

Beth has done it again!

Having taken the Midlands Cross Country title in January, she won Midlands 1500m gold at the track championship at Nuneaton in August, and backed it up with a bronze in the 3000m (she’s currently ranked 18th in the country at 3000m).

Results round up

The last T+F took place on 19 July at Shrewsbury. The U11B, U13G, and U17W had full teams out and we had individual winners including Erin, Beth, Sam, Toby, Manali, Edith and Hester. The U11G and U13G were 3rd on the night and the U17W had another win, to take the title. This meant the U13G took third place overall and the Wenlock girls were third in the League, although the club could only manage overall 4th.

U17W trophy

Harriet, Hester, Edith and Manali, (and Sophia) – the victorious U17W

This is only the second time in the club’s history that we have won a T+F trophy – two years ago the same core group of athletes took the U15G title. They’d be the first to say they’re not necessarily the best individuals in the league but they work brilliantly as a team. And this has rounded off a good 12 months: cross country runners up and sportshall champions as well!

Elsewhere, congratulations to Beth and Sophia on their performances in the English Schools. Both are competing at the Midlands T+F Championships in Nuneaton on 11/12 August.

Louix and Manali competed at the National Biathle Championships in Salford on 22 July, coming 3rd and 9th respectively.

louix

Louix (left) once again represented GB at the European Biathle Championships in Germany on 29 July, where his 6th place secured a spot at the Worlds in Egypt later in the year. Many congratulations to him!

So far we have 10 athletes who have made the Powerof10 rankings in at least one event and over 80 PBs achieved by Wenlock members this season. And remember there’s still time to improve.
