Autumn training info

New training session
There is a new Thursday night training session running from 6-7pm. Any club member is welcome at no extra cost. The session will cover endurance and sprint training, with occasional hill rep sessions and longer runs. As the nights draw in you will need a hi-vis top and head torch.

Saturday training
This has now reverted to the normal times:
U11 9-10.30
U13+ 10-11.30.
Athletes are expected to arrive before the start time, so the session can start promptly, and stay for the whole session. These may be indoors or outside, so please bring appropriate clothing.

We prefer athletes to wear club T shirts for training, and it is essential to wear a club vest if competing. Steph comes to the first training session of every month to sell kit.

Cross country dates

There are four matches in the SYAL Cross Country League. Clubs and individuals accumulate points and there are medals for the top three teams, and top three individuals, in each age group at the end of the season, as well as trophies for overall club positions. We have won the overall girls title for the last two years, so are hoping to retain it, but we are also trying to encourage more boys to compete. Even if you don’t think of yourself as a distance runner, cross country is great for boosting strength and endurance.

Any club member can take part, and it’s a case of the more the merrier. Simply turn up about half an hour before your scheduled race, remember to wear your club vest, and look out for the Wenlock flag, and for Dean and Matt. It is helpful if you let Dean know in advance, but not essential.

Below are the race dates, places, times and distances:

22 Sept Lilleshall, National Sports Centre, TF10 9AT
6 Oct Shrewsbury, Meole Brace School, SY3 9DW
10 Nov Oswestry, Oswestry School playing fields, SY11 2TL
1 Dec Much Wenlock, William Brookes, TF1 6NB

All races take place on Sunday afternoons:
1 pm U11G 1500m
1.15 U11B 1500m
1.30 U15G 3000m and U17W 4000m
1.55 U13B 3000m
2.15 U15B 4000m and U17M 5000m
2.40 U13G 2000m

See you there!

Wenlock Relays 2019

We had a fantastic turn out for the second Wenlock Relays with 21 teams entered, and 18 actually making it to race day.  Representatives from 8 clubs across Shropshire battled it out along the old railway line and then back over the sting in the tail that is Windmill Hill, all looking to be the fastest team in their category.

As last year, the most popular category was the family category but it was fantastic to see more entries from vets and from juniors this year.  The average age across the teams ranged from 11.25 to 51.75.

A sunny, but slightly cooler race than last year made for some perfect running conditions and we saw a new course record of 31.25 set by the winning team – Shrewsbury Rockets (junior category – also the youngest team by average age in the whole competition).  Last year’s overall winners, The Great Gibbons, held on to win the family category again, in a time of 32.20.  Winner of the Vets competition was #Bad Town Runners in a time of 38.22.

Thank you to all the runners who helped to make this such a fun event. And thank you to the marshals, and the course referee, Grace Hough, without whom we could not run this event.

We look forward to welcoming you all back next year.

Wenlock Games 2019

Thanks to our magnificent catering, we raised a very healthy sum towards club finances for the coming year, so many thanks to Liz and her team.

There were a disappointing number of Wenlock vests on show for what is effectively our home competition, but those members who did compete produced some great results:

Well done to Tristan, Ray, James I, John, Richard, Ruari, Pippa, Maddie, Tess, Isla, Rosie, Cerys and Shona for getting the badge out.

Congratulations to Oliver C 2 golds and 1 silver, Lola gold and bronze, Lois gold, Aimee gold, and Ike silver.

SYAL matches

The 2nd match of the season was held at Shrewsbury on 27 June. There were individual wins for Oliver C, Beau, Tristan and Oscar. The U11s and the U15B were 2nd on the night, with the U13B and U17M coming 3rd. The club was third placed overall behind Telford and Shrewsbury.

The 3rd match followed soon after, on 4 July at Telford. Individual wins for Oliver C, Lucy, Aimee, Henry G, James, Henry F and Sam.  The U11s again came 2nd, the U17M improved to 2nd and the girls had a better night with the U13 and U15, joining the U15B in 3rd. We were again placed third but were much closer to second placed Shrewsbury.

The last competition was held on 18 July at Shrewsbury. The provisional results are now in:

There individual wins for Oliver C, Beau, John and Holly. The U11s maintained their form, coming 2nd again, along with the U15B; the U17M were 3rd and the club slipped to 4th on the night due to a strong performance from Oswestry.

The U11s (who compete together) had a consistent season, helped by a solid turnout in all matches and were rewarded with 2nd place overall. Elsewhere results were patchy as we struggled to fill team places: the U15B claimed 2nd overall and the U17M took third. The club finished in 3rd place behind Telford and Shrewsbury, and a mere 3 match points ahead of Oswestry. Many thanks to our team of officials, whose points probably helped secure that position.

Shropshire county championships 2019

The county champs took place on 11 May at Telford. We had a small band of mostly younger athletes who got the badge out, so well done to Abi, Emily, Lois, Lucy, Leonie and Ray.

Special mention to Oliver gold (60m) and bronze (600m), Tristan  silver (LJ), Beth silver (1500m), Alexander bronze (60m).

Many of our athletes will also be taking part in the Shropshire Schools Champs in June.

Finally a belated but well deserved congratulations to Oliver who took the county U10 cross country title back in March.
