Congratulations to our Midlands Cross Country Champion, Beth, who stormed to victory in the U13G race. To my knowledge it’s a first for the club.
The Championships was held at Wollaton Park, Nottingham in Saturday 27 January, on an exceptionally muddy and challenging course. The Olympians were well represented with Lucy, Edith, Manali and Louix all competing, as well as Dean in the 12K senior race.
Good luck to all our runners at the Shropshire Schools XC at Oswestry this Saturday.
The last match in the series will be held at the Marches School, Morda Road, Oswestry, SY11 2AR, on Sunday 11 February. Athletes are asked to arrive at 1.30 for a 2 pm start, and there will be presentations after the final relays.
Our results in the SYAL sportshalls are very close for Overall and Boys Overall. For the Overall trophy we are second, 1 point below, with third only 1 point behind us. For the Boys Overall we are 3rd, 1.5 points behind 1st, so we need a 100% turnout and a great set of results.
The U13B are currently winning and 3.5 points ahead (max per meeting is 5), but other teams also have a chance to sneak into the top spot if results go their way.
If full teams had competed at the last event we would be in a stronger position, but it is essential for the club to have all our teams full for the last one. Cards and e mail invitations are going out. Please make every effort to prioritise this event and be there if you are selected. If it impossible to get there, please let us know immediately, so we can call up subs.
There are two regional sportshall competitions this term, one for U11 and another for U13 and U15. Based on their performances in the SYAL sportshall league, the following Olympians were selected to compete for Shropshire:
U11 – Emily, Lois, Holly, Zoe, Thea, Ray, Douglas
U13 – Brooke, Ruari, James, Liam
U15 – Edith, Sam, Louix
Good luck to all of them!
The third sportshall match of the series was held at Wenlock on 14 January. The U13B had another good day, cementing their first place with another win. The U11G had a great day, winning four out of the six races and beating Bridgnorth by 18 points on the day – they are now lying third overall. The U15G took second on the day but have lost their overall lead. The U15B despite being down on numbers, played it tactically and came second on the day, giving them third overall. By my calculations we’re still lying in second behind Bridgnorth in the league.
The final match, with presentations afterwards, will be at Oswestry on Sunday 11 February. There are no individual awards or medals in sportshall, but shields are awarded to winning teams and clubs.
We had a good turnout of Olympians at the County Champs at Attingham Park on 6 January. Congratulations to Beth – U13G silver – and Imogen – U20W bronze. They, along with Edith and Georgie, will represent the county at the national Intercounties event near Loughborough in March. The U13G team were unlucky to miss out on a medal by one point.
We will also be getting the badge out at the Midlands XC Championships at Nottingham on 27 January, and a number of our athletes will be competing for their schools at the Shropshire Schools XC Champs at Oswestry on 3 February. Good luck to all of them.
Training restarts on Sat 6 January at 9 am for U11 and 10 am for everyone else. Please note there is no cross country training because of the county championships – endurance training will start from Sat 13. The cost per session remains at £2. Training will be indoors until Easter but we may go outside to use the track if the weather is good, so please make sure your have warm clothing with you.
Tuesday sessions start on 9 January 7-8 pm and all U13+ athletes are encouraged to attend.
The next sportshall competition takes place on Sunday 14 January, beginning at 10 am. Invitation cards/ e mails will be going out this weekend, so please reply with your availability asap. All athletes should try to arrive by 9.30 so we can finalise teams and events. We are lying in second place overall, with two teams in the lead, so we need a good turnout.
Best of luck to everyone.
