Wenlock Wins Top Sportshall Honours

There was a very close finish to the Shropshire Young Athletes Sportshall Series last weekend. The final event involving five teams took place in Oswestry on Sunday with Wenlock Olympians, Bridgnorth A.C. and Telford A.C. all hoping to finish the season with trophies.
Following some fierce competition and close finishes, Wenlock won Overall Boys, Overall Girls and Overall Team trophies as well as two age group awards.

This completes a successful winter season for Wenlock Olympians. A total of 14 Wenlock athletes have been selected to represent Shropshire at regional meetings and their cross-country squad have produced excellent performances, achieving overall second place in the Shropshire League.

Shropshire Cross Country Season 2014/5

Our congratulations to Bridgnorth, who are this years Champions. Our second place (and the proud owners of the runners up shield) is a fantastic achievement by everybody considering we represent a fairly small community compared to the larger towns of Telford, Shrewsbury, and Oswestry.

Cross country attracts more teams than just the 5 athletics clubs in the county – in total 11 clubs and schools entered the series.

It was tough competition this year, but Wenlock Olympians were also tough in the usual challenging conditions this sport represents, and everyone worked hard to be second placed club.

It also represents a real team effort from the young 9 year olds right up to the experienced 16 & 17 year olds but the team also consists of Mum, Dads and other supporters as well as my fellow coaches and volunteers at the Olympians, without everybody’s collective efforts we would have been inevitably weaker.

So thanks to those who were able to come to Packwood and finished the season so well, It was real joy watching everyone tackle the hill in such a calm and mature manner. I know it would have been painful (I had run it myself before everyone arrived!) but the runners just looked like they were just getting on with it, a sure sign that they were in control.

Remember that the second place team score includes the four races going back to September – so anyone involved at Oswestry, Wenlock & Bridgnorth contributed to this result!

We have to also offer BIG, BIG CONGRATULATIONS to our individual age group medal winners; the following were the Packwood entries who won awards:

U17 Girls Legends Team: Who followed up their U15 Championship of last year with this years U17 Championship. Well done to Vikki Blenkiron, Georgie Benbow, Katie Hawthorn & Imogen Fawcett.

U15 Girls Team: Who won silver medals for second place and who were only 20 points behind the winning, and very strong, Shrewsbury High School Girls team.

Well done to Lizzie Benbow, Amelia Fawcett, Maisie Wroe & Maisie Hill.

U15 Boys Team: Who finished third and collect Bronze medals, just 17 points behind the winners Oswestry. Well done to Sergi Bernat, Alex Nicholas.

U 17 Boys Team: Robbie Cooper is our U17 Boys team, he ran all four races and was placed second U17 Boys team on his own! Robbie was also placed second highest individual points scorer over the three races. There is only one way to look at this, as a remarkable story in the history of Wenlock Olympians (and it is a long, long history!).

This guy is a legend and has our grateful thanks for his commitment and perseverance this season, and he has often played football the morning of races!

Runners who have not yet had their medals from these age group teams will receive them at the club on Saturday 14th Feb due to the schools XC event next Saturday (the 8th). Make sure you are there.

Our second place County Shield will also be there if runners want pics with it!

But whether we won individual team awards or individual points scorers awards or not, we started as a team in September and finished as a team in February – the second team in Shropshire!

Now the club moves on to next weeks Sportshall event where more trophies are within reach I understand, so if you are competing you know what you have to do FOR THEBADGE.
