The Olympian Games athletics takes place on Sunday 15 July at Wenlock. It is our home competition and we expect all club members to get involved. Details and entry form can be found at http://www.wenlock-olympian-society.org.uk/games/athletics/. Closing date for entries is 21 June.
There is also a triathlon on 8 July, a road race on 15 July and, new for this year a 9 mile trail race along Wenlock Edge on 3 June. Details of all of these can be found on the Olympians website http://www.wenlock-olympian-society.org.uk/games
The first SYAL meeting of the season is always a test of endurance – dark, cold and windswept. We also had to deal with the lack of Y8 athletes who were otherwise engaged at the William Brookes Parents’ Evening. But there was still plenty to cheer. Next match is at Cosford on Thursday 24 May. Unfortunately results have been delayed – I will update here when they are available. Remember that full results for all SYAL competitions can be found at http://www.theorchard.clara.net/
The first YDL took place at an equally cold and windswept Stourport. This was an all new, but a hopefully very positive experience: well run, with a good range of competitors and a first chance for our U17s to run, throw and jump alongside older athletes. Standout performance was probably Sophia’s huge PB in the 1500m. Many thanks to Bridgnorth for organising the team, and making us feel so welcome. The next competition is also at Stourport, on Sunday 27 May. It would be great to see more blue vests in action. YDL results can be found at http://www.ukydl.org.uk/page4.html
U17+ athletes have also been invited to compete in a combined Shropshire team in the Midlands Track League. There is no upper age limit on this and all ages compete together. Upcoming fixtures are
2 June Hereford
7 July Nuneaton
5 Aug Kettering
These are all a distance away but Shrewsbury provide coach transport. If you are interested contact Catriona.
The Shropshire Schools Combined Events championships take place on Mon 21 and Tues 22 May. This must be entered through schools but if you think you might be interested please contact your PE teacher. The entry form and more information can be found here http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnx0ZWxmb3JkYXRobGV0aWNjbHVifGd4OjNiNjY2ZWIyOWFhMzQxN2Q
Finally, good luck to all our competitors at the County Champs on Sat 12 and Wed 16 May!
The first meeting of the SYAL track and field league will take place at Oakengates track, Telford on Thursday 26 April. Athletes should aim to arrive by 6.15 to make sure they are organised and registered. Clubs vests must be worn and you need to collect a number from team managers when you arrive. Events run to a timetable and you are free to leave when your event/s are finished.
Invitation cards were handed out at training today, and will be e mailed shortly. Please make sure you respond with your availability as soon as possible.
There are different events for each age group at each meeting, so even if you are not invited to the first, you may well get a chance later in the season.
NB For U17+ athletes the first YDL match is on Sunday 29 April. Please e mail Catriona (email@example.com) with availability.
The closing date for the County Championships is 30 April. All details and entry forms at http://www.telfordathleticclub.co.uk/track-field/county-championships
March is a slack time for competitions, when we traditionally start to think about the summer track and field season.
Wenlock compete in the 4 match SYAL which runs from 6.45 on Thursday evenings during the summer term. The entry is by invitation, and like the sportshall it features different events on different evenings. The usual age groups apply, although the U11s compete as a joint team.
April 26th Telford
May 24th RAF Cosford
June 28th Shrewsbury (Oswestry meet)
July 20th Shrewsbury (Shrewsbury meet).
For our older athletes (U17+) we are now entering the YDL as part of a combined team with Bridgnorth (known as Border Olympians). This is an exciting new opportunity, both for club members who are too old for the SYAL, and for anyone who wants to do more competitions, try out new events, and likes a challenge. The YDL has 3 matches, on Sundays. They have a full day timetable which allows them to hold the full range of events. Full details can be found at http://www.ukydl.org.uk/index.html
29th April Worcester
27th May Kidderminster
1st July Solihull
The Shropshire County Championships are held on 12 May. Details and entry forms at www.theorchard.clara.net
There are also a number of open competitions which anyone can enter as individuals. We would encourage athletes to do so, as competition is the best way to improve your PBs.
Sun 8 April Kidderminster Open
Sun 15 Tipton Games
Sun 15 Stoke Open
Tues 17 Worcester (and other meetings on Tuesdays throughout the term)
Sun 22 Birchfield Open
Details of all these can be found at www.powerof10.info (which is the best place to find information about all competitions)
Last but not least, there is of course the Wenlock Olympian Games, on Sunday 15 July.
The Shropshire sportshall championships will be held on the morning of Saturday 24 March at Oldbury Wells, Bridgnorth. This is an individual competition (entry form below) with limited events in each age group and medals available. Entry is £2 per event and the closing date is Monday 12 March.
There is no seating at Bridgnorth, so spectators might want to bring chairs!
The last match in the series will be held at the Marches School, Morda Road, Oswestry, SY11 2AR, on Sunday 11 February. Athletes are asked to arrive at 1.30 for a 2 pm start, and there will be presentations after the final relays.
Our results in the SYAL sportshalls are very close for Overall and Boys Overall. For the Overall trophy we are second, 1 point below, with third only 1 point behind us. For the Boys Overall we are 3rd, 1.5 points behind 1st, so we need a 100% turnout and a great set of results.
The U13B are currently winning and 3.5 points ahead (max per meeting is 5), but other teams also have a chance to sneak into the top spot if results go their way.
If full teams had competed at the last event we would be in a stronger position, but it is essential for the club to have all our teams full for the last one. Cards and e mail invitations are going out. Please make every effort to prioritise this event and be there if you are selected. If it impossible to get there, please let us know immediately, so we can call up subs.
Training restarts on Sat 6 January at 9 am for U11 and 10 am for everyone else. Please note there is no cross country training because of the county championships – endurance training will start from Sat 13. The cost per session remains at £2. Training will be indoors until Easter but we may go outside to use the track if the weather is good, so please make sure your have warm clothing with you.
Tuesday sessions start on 9 January 7-8 pm and all U13+ athletes are encouraged to attend.
The next sportshall competition takes place on Sunday 14 January, beginning at 10 am. Invitation cards/ e mails will be going out this weekend, so please reply with your availability asap. All athletes should try to arrive by 9.30 so we can finalise teams and events. We are lying in second place overall, with two teams in the lead, so we need a good turnout.
Best of luck to everyone.
The last races of the SYAL cross country league take place next Sunday, 3 December, at Oswestry.
All those coming to the races should use the nominated parking facility at Marches School Morda Road, Oswestry, SY11 2AR, accessed from Morda Road. Follow the footpath from the car park to the top of the school, past the Sportshall and through the gate, crossing the road to the course at Oswestry School.
The races take place round the perimeter of the playing fields so the ground is even, but there is a steady pull up at the start of the race/ lap, from field A to field B.
Race times are as previouly: 1 pm U11G 1500m
1.15 U11B 1500m
1.30 U15G 3000m/ U17W 4000m
1.55 U13B 3000m
2.15 U15B 4000m/ U17M 5000m
2.40 U13G 2000m
Medal and trophies will be presented as soon as possible after the final race.
After our strong home performance we could do with another good turnout!
Meanwhile we have had a number of athletes on county duty, running for Shropshire at an intercounties fixture in Warwickshire: congratulations to Edith, Ruari and Lucy. Manali and Louix would have been running, were it not for the National Biathlon taking place on the same day, and Beth was competing at the Liverpool leg of the National Cross Challenge.
This year’s championships will be held at Attingham Park on Saturday 6 January. Details of times, distances etc are below.
For entry purposes a team constitutes of 4 athletes (3 will score) in all age groups except senior men where it is 8 athletes (6 will score).

Entries are through the club and WOAC pays for entries, so please let Dean know if you are interested in taking part. There are individual and team medals available, and the chance of county selection for top six athletes. It would be great to see a decent number of Wenlock runners, particularly from those teams/ individuals that are doing well in the SYAL.
Entries close 31 dDecember
This Sunday – November 5 – is the third of the SYAL cross country league, our home event at Wenlock.
We are unfortunately still looking for volunteers, to set up, marshal and help with catering. Please contact Ian if you can help.
Obviously we want a good turnout of Wenlock athletes. If you only run in one race all season – this should be it!
