Final cross country

The last races of the SYAL cross country league take place next Sunday, 3 December, at Oswestry.

All those coming to the races should use the nominated parking facility at Marches School Morda Road, Oswestry, SY11 2AR, accessed from Morda Road. Follow the footpath from the car park to the top of the school, past the Sportshall and through the gate, crossing the road to the course at Oswestry School.

syal-xc-oswestry-school-fields-mapThe races take place round the perimeter of the playing fields so the ground is even, but there is a steady pull up at the start of the race/ lap, from field A to field B.

Race times are as previouly:         1 pm U11G 1500m
1.15 U11B 1500m

After our strong home performance we could do with another good turnout!

Meanwhile we have had a number of athletes on county duty, running for Shropshire at an intercounties fixture in Warwickshire: congratulations to Edith, Ruari and Lucy. Manali and Louix would have been running, were it not for the National Biathlon taking place on the same day, and Beth was competing at the Liverpool leg of the National Cross Challenge.

Wenlock cross country

This Sunday  – November 5 – is the third of the SYAL cross country league, our home event at Wenlock.

We are unfortunately still looking for volunteers, to set up, marshal and help with catering. Please contact Ian if you can help.

Obviously we want a good turnout of Wenlock athletes. If you only run in one race all season – this should be it!

The race times and course can be found below

Bridgnorth sportshall results

We had a good start to the season, although some teams were short of athletes and ended up losing points as a result. There were, however, other clubs who did significantly less well in getting their athletes out.

The U15B are in third, the U11G in second and the U13B and U15G came first on the day.

By my calculations this puts the girls in second place and the boys in third, with the club lying second overall. Because there are different combinations of events at each sportshall these positions can change from match to match, so it is important to get our athletes out and fight for every point.

The next competition is at Wenlock on Sunday 19 November (not 12th as said in the newsletter!) and with the early start time of 10 am (athletes arriving at 9.30). Invitation cards will go out after half term.

First sportshall

The first sportshall of the season takes place this Sunday, 15 October at Oldbury Wells School. The event starts at 2 pm but try to get there by 1.30 to ensure that we can sort out teams and deal with any last minutes changes. Things are usually over by 4, but you are free to leave as soon as your events are finished. Last year there were no benches, so you might want to bring a cushion if you’re supporting! Competing athletes need club vests, although there will be some available to borrow on the day.

If you haven’t done sportshall before, it is very exciting, intense and noisy. There are various A and B races, a rotating number of field events and finally relays. The important thing is that all athletes score points which count towards team totals, so it is imperative that we get full teams out and even coming last can be vital. There are end of season trophies for the winning girls and boys teams in each age group, plus trophies for overall boys, girls and club. Traditionally this is one of our strongest competitions, but last year was a lean one, with only the U11B winning. Let’s make this year a good one!

Please let team managers know as soon as possible if you are unable to come.

Next SYAL competitions

The next cross country races will be held this Sunday 8 October at Oldbury Wells School, Oldbury Wells, Bridgnorth, WV16 5JD. There is parking available in the school grounds.

The course is split into two sections – flattish loop(s) on the playing fields – and a rough field which is full of short, steep hill sections. If you haven’t run the course before it is worth getting there early enough to walk it. When you arrive look out for Dean, Matt and your team mates. No numbers needed (except for U17) but don’t forget club vests. Good luck!

Lilleshall cross country Sun 17 Sept

The first SYAL cross country race of the season is this Sunday at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. The Centre is quite hard to find if you’ve never been before. It is well signposted from the A518 Newport road but if travelling to the centre using Satellite Navigation they advise you to use the postcode TF10 9LQ.

There is plenty of parking but it is some distance from the actual course, so please allow enough time to get there, park and walk, as well as to warm up and walk the course. The course itself is quite rough and uneven – tricky underfoot, especially if we have a week of unsettled weather. If you’re wearing spikes it’s probably a good idea to put longer cross country ones in (they can be easily ordered online). Please also remember to wear club vests.

You only need to turn up in time for your race (details below) – there are no numbers or official registration. Dean and Matt will be around and at the end you will be given a number to hand into someone from Wenlock to record your position.

It would good to see plenty of blue vests out, to get the season off to a good start. Good luck to all our runners.

The Telford Schools Cross Country races also start this week, and a number of Olympians will be running for their schools – best wishes to all of them.

Next season’s fixtures

From September we turn our attention to cross country and sportshall, with four league competitions in each. They all take place on Sundays between September and February.

Cross country races are open to all club athletes and we would encourage as many as possible to run, not only to gain points for their team, but to help with personal fitness and stamina. Cross country is unique because, in the legendary words of John: ‘we start as a team, and we finish as a team’.

Sportshall competitions (one of our strongest areas) are for invited athletes only.

Both events give you the opportunity to compete for the county.
