The second match of the cross country series was held at Meole Brace School in Shrewsbury on Sunday 6 October.
Oliver again came second and the U11B maintained their position at the top with another first. Beth again won her race and the U15G sneaked a win against Telford, but still lie in second in the series overall. The U17W again finished third, as did the U13G. We had eight other top ten runners across the age groups – congratulations to them.
We could still do with some more runners, especially U11G, U15B and U17M.
The next races are at Oswestry on Sunday 10 November. Please come along if you can.
There are 4 matches in the sportshall league. They all take place on Sundays, usually starting at 2pm (which means arrival by 1.30 to finalise team sheets). The provisional dates and locations are:
13 Oct Oswestry, Marches School
17 Nov Telford
12 Dec Wenlock, William Brookes
9 Feb Oswestry, Marches School
There are only two athletes per club in each event, so you need to be invited to compete. Invitation cards are handed out at training and e mails will also go out beforehand. There are different events at different venues, so you may not be asked for the first match but called up for a later fixture.
The first match is on 13 October at Oswestry. Cards and e mails have gone out, so please let us know asap if you are available. We need full teams in order to do well in this competition.
There are four matches in the SYAL Cross Country League. Clubs and individuals accumulate points and there are medals for the top three teams, and top three individuals, in each age group at the end of the season, as well as trophies for overall club positions. We have won the overall girls title for the last two years, so are hoping to retain it, but we are also trying to encourage more boys to compete. Even if you don’t think of yourself as a distance runner, cross country is great for boosting strength and endurance.
Any club member can take part, and it’s a case of the more the merrier. Simply turn up about half an hour before your scheduled race, remember to wear your club vest, and look out for the Wenlock flag, and for Dean and Matt. It is helpful if you let Dean know in advance, but not essential.
Below are the race dates, places, times and distances:
22 Sept Lilleshall, National Sports Centre, TF10 9AT
6 Oct Shrewsbury, Meole Brace School, SY3 9DW
10 Nov Oswestry, Oswestry School playing fields, SY11 2TL

All races take place on Sunday afternoons:

1.15 U11B 1500m
1.30 U15G 3000m and U17W 4000m
1.55 U13B 3000m
2.15 U15B 4000m and U17M 5000m
2.40 U13G 2000m
See you there!

The second match of the sportshall league was held on 18 November. There were individual wins for Oliver, Wilf, Rhys, John, James. The U13G came 3rd and the U13B and U15B came second. The next match is on 13 January at Wenlock at 10 am. Invitations have gone out. Please make every effort to compete if you’ve been invited, or let coaches know if you are unable to be there.
The third match takes place this Sunday (11 November) at Meole Brace School, Shrewsbury, SY3 9DW. This is parking on site (although as this is a new venue, I’m not sure how much!) Dean has sent out course maps, but it’s a basic ‘laps of the field’ race. Usual distances, times and rules apply.
We had a great turnout last time, and some fantastic results because of it. Please let Dean know if you’re running, and please get out and support ‘the badge’.
The second match in the sportshall league takes place on Sunday 18 November at Telford Tennis Centre, TF2 7AB – by the athletics track. There is plenty of parking but again, no seating, so spectators might want to bring folding chairs. Athletes should arrive at 1.30 for a 2pm start.
This is an invitation event and cards/ e mails will be going out – please let the club know asap whether you can or cannot attend.
There is a chance to get selected to represent Shropshire at regional sportshall competitions in February.
Good luck to all our athletes.
