Individual success

Robbie Cooper has been fell running this summer and came 3rd overall in the Mercia Summer Series, winning the U19M age group. The Mercia series is seven races, involving some of the toughest hills in Shropshire and over 300 competitors in total. He also claimed bronze on the track in the Shropshire Champs U20 3000m. He has now gone on to Bath University, where he’s already joined the athletics club. Good luck for the future!

Next SYAL competitions

The next cross country races will be held this Sunday 8 October at Oldbury Wells School, Oldbury Wells, Bridgnorth, WV16 5JD. There is parking available in the school grounds.

The course is split into two sections – flattish loop(s) on the playing fields – and a rough field which is full of short, steep hill sections. If you haven’t run the course before it is worth getting there early enough to walk it. When you arrive look out for Dean, Matt and your team mates. No numbers needed (except for U17) but don’t forget club vests. Good luck!

Race times and distances as before:

Lilleshall cross country results

The first SYAL cross country of the season was very much a story of two halves. The early races took place in glorious sunshine, and the later ones struggled through heavy rain. Equally, the girls were great but the Wenlock boys were…well, not there. It was a real disappointment for the few boys who did run, and who turned in some good individual performances. Cross country is a team competition and we need to get teams out.

But the good news was that our girls started out as they ran last year – we had lots of runners, fabulous team spirit and some stand out performances. Congratulations to Beth and Edith on their 1st and 2nd. The U13s and U15s are both in second, and Lizzie, singlehandedly, is in U17W third.

The next race is on 8 October at Bridgnorth.

Lilleshall cross country Sun 17 Sept

The first SYAL cross country race of the season is this Sunday at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. The Centre is quite hard to find if you’ve never been before. It is well signposted from the A518 Newport road but if travelling to the centre using Satellite Navigation they advise you to use the postcode TF10 9LQ.

There is plenty of parking but it is some distance from the actual course, so please allow enough time to get there, park and walk, as well as to warm up and walk the course. The course itself is quite rough and uneven – tricky underfoot, especially if we have a week of unsettled weather. If you’re wearing spikes it’s probably a good idea to put longer cross country ones in (they can be easily ordered online). Please also remember to wear club vests.

You only need to turn up in time for your race (details below) – there are no numbers or official registration. Dean and Matt will be around and at the end you will be given a number to hand into someone from Wenlock to record your position.

It would good to see plenty of blue vests out, to get the season off to a good start. Good luck to all our runners.

The Telford Schools Cross Country races also start this week, and a number of Olympians will be running for their schools – best wishes to all of them.

1 pm U11G 1500m

2.15 U15B 4000m and U17M 5000m

Next season’s fixtures

From September we turn our attention to cross country and sportshall, with four league competitions in each. They all take place on Sundays between September and February.

Cross country races are open to all club athletes and we would encourage as many as possible to run, not only to gain points for their team, but to help with personal fitness and stamina. Cross country is unique because, in the legendary words of John: ‘we start as a team, and we finish as a team’.

Sportshall competitions (one of our strongest areas) are for invited athletes only.

Both events give you the opportunity to compete for the county.

Congratulations to Louix who recently competed at the European biathle in Portugal.

His performance there means he has qualified to represent Great Britain in the world biathle championships in Spain in September.

A biathle consists of a continuous, mass start run-swim-run competition.

SYAL final results

The final meeting was held on 20 July. We had some solid results, and possibly our best competition of the season.

Individual winners included George, Beth, Manali, Alex and Toby.
Our U13B and U17W were back on form, both gaining 3rd place on the night, and the U13G had a good night, also coming 3rd. Overall, we 4th, significantly ahead of Oswestry in 5th.

Combining the results of the four competitions, the club finished 4th behind Telford, Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury. Our U13B, U15G and U17W were the most successful of our teams, all finishing in 3rd place.

County selection

There are limited opportunities to be selected for the county for track and field (and mostly for U15 and U17s)
Congratulations to Edith, Harriet, Charlie, Alex and Toby who were selected to compete for Shropshire at the regional Mason’s Trophy in Birmingham.
Toby also competed in the regional combined events competition.
Beth ran for Shropshire in a match against Staffordshire.

Wenlock Games round up

What a wonderful day. Many thanks to everyone involved with the Olympian Society, who organised everything so well.

Our own catering dream team did a sterling job (in pretty hot conditions) and raised a magnificent £480 plus for the club, so again, a huge thanks to everyone who helped out, or baked, and a special mention to Liz Townsley for all her hard work.

We had a magnificent turnout of younger athletes, with 85% of our U11s taking part, and although there were fewer older competitors, we enjoyed some success across the age groups:

Wilfred, Beth – gold, with Beth breaking the championship 800m record
Alex – silver and gold in the triple jump
Edith, Hannah – silver
Douglas, William, Charlie, Lois – bronze

The previous day Manali, Charlie (2nd) and Louix (1st) had all medalled in the junior biathlon.

We had a smattering of ‘older’ Olympians in the triathlon – Dean, Matt and Andy, showing that our coaches don’t just coach!

Sadly, there was no one from the club in the road race. If anyone would like an incentive for next year, there is a trophy for the highest placed Olympian. It could be you!
