The long awaited Cosford results are finally in. There were individual wins for Ella, Ruari, John, Lucy, Beth, Toby, Sophia and Manali. Unfortunately only the U13G fielded a complete team and were rewarded with second place on the night. The U17W were first (by a mere two points) putting them in the lead overall (just!). The U17B were third. As a club we’re lying in 4th, with the girls in 3rd.
The next SYAL competition is at Shrewsbury on Thursday 28 June – invitation cards and e mails have gone out, so please let us know asap if you are available.
We had only two athletes at the second YDL meeting at Stourport on 27 May, but both Sophia and Toby produced PBs, showing how important competition is in improving performance.
A number of Wenlock athletes also competed at the Shropshire Schools Championships on 9 June. Harriet (hammer) and Lizzie (1500m) got bronzes. Hester (300mH), Edith (800m), Beth (1500m) all gained silvers and a chance to represent the county at the regional Mason’s Trophy in Birmingham. Sophia is also off to Birmingham, having won the 800m title, and is just outside the qualifying time for the English Schools in both 800m and 1500m. Toby won the Shropshire Schools Combined Events title, competing over two evenings in the IB Octathon.
The second T+F meeting of the season takes place at Cosford on Thursday 24 May. Invitation cards have gone out, so please reply promptly so we can finalise teams.
For those of you new to Cosford, the parking is fairly limited, so please give yourself enough time. We’d encourage athletes to arrive by 6.15 so that last minute changes can be made, numbers collected etc. The postcode for the track is WV7 3EX, but you can simply follow signs for the RAF museum.
The results of the first meeting are finally out. There were individual wins for Ella, Miley, John I, Liam, Lois, Beth, Toby, Louix, Sophia and Manali
The U13B and U13G both came 3rd. The best result on the night was the U17W, who are in 2nd, only one point behind Shrewsbury.
We did suffer from the clash with William Brooke’s Parents’ Evening, and we have very few U11 boys at the moment, however, we really do need to pull out all the stops if we are to get back into contention.
The Shropshire track and field Championships were held on Sat 12 May and Wed 16 May at Telford. They enjoyed good weather and a generally good turnout, especially in the lower age groups. Sadly we only had 13 athletes competing, although many of them were successful. Well done to Ray, Lucy, Aimee and Leonie for getting the badge out.
Rosie and Lois silver
Emily and Hester two bronzes
Edith two silvers and a bronze
Toby three silvers
Beth 1500m and 3000m gold
The U13G also took silver in the relay
Standout performance, however, was definitely Ruari who won 3 golds in 1500m, HJ and hurdles and a bronze
It was great to see so many members and their families at the annual Presentation Evening which was held at Priory Hall on Friday 11 May. This year, alongside the usual trophies and prizes, we also poignantly remembered John Simpson. John, former Olympian President, mayor of Much Wenlock and 2012 torch bearer, was one of those who reinvigorated the WOS and WOAC in the 1980s. He was a great supporter of both throughout his life and will be much missed.
The main awards this year went to:
Angel Award – Ray
Coaches’ Award – Manali
Team of the Year – Girls’ Cross Country
Club Member of the Year – Hester and Eva
Athlete of the Year – Edith
Norman Wood Trophy – The Fawcett family
Many thanks to all who attended, and contributed food, and special thanks to Liz for all her organisation.
The Olympian Games athletics takes place on Sunday 15 July at Wenlock. It is our home competition and we expect all club members to get involved. Details and entry form can be found at http://www.wenlock-olympian-society.org.uk/games/athletics/. Closing date for entries is 21 June.
There is also a triathlon on 8 July, a road race on 15 July and, new for this year a 9 mile trail race along Wenlock Edge on 3 June. Details of all of these can be found on the Olympians website http://www.wenlock-olympian-society.org.uk/games
The first SYAL meeting of the season is always a test of endurance – dark, cold and windswept. We also had to deal with the lack of Y8 athletes who were otherwise engaged at the William Brookes Parents’ Evening. But there was still plenty to cheer. Next match is at Cosford on Thursday 24 May. Unfortunately results have been delayed – I will update here when they are available. Remember that full results for all SYAL competitions can be found at http://www.theorchard.clara.net/
The first YDL took place at an equally cold and windswept Stourport. This was an all new, but a hopefully very positive experience: well run, with a good range of competitors and a first chance for our U17s to run, throw and jump alongside older athletes. Standout performance was probably Sophia’s huge PB in the 1500m. Many thanks to Bridgnorth for organising the team, and making us feel so welcome. The next competition is also at Stourport, on Sunday 27 May. It would be great to see more blue vests in action. YDL results can be found at http://www.ukydl.org.uk/page4.html
U17+ athletes have also been invited to compete in a combined Shropshire team in the Midlands Track League. There is no upper age limit on this and all ages compete together. Upcoming fixtures are
2 June Hereford
7 July Nuneaton
5 Aug Kettering
These are all a distance away but Shrewsbury provide coach transport. If you are interested contact Catriona.
The Shropshire Schools Combined Events championships take place on Mon 21 and Tues 22 May. This must be entered through schools but if you think you might be interested please contact your PE teacher. The entry form and more information can be found here http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnx0ZWxmb3JkYXRobGV0aWNjbHVifGd4OjNiNjY2ZWIyOWFhMzQxN2Q
Finally, good luck to all our competitors at the County Champs on Sat 12 and Wed 16 May!
