County selection

There are limited opportunities to be selected for the county for track and field (and mostly for U15 and U17s)
Congratulations to Edith, Harriet, Charlie, Alex and Toby who were selected to compete for Shropshire at the regional Mason’s Trophy in Birmingham.
Toby also competed in the regional combined events competition.
Beth ran for Shropshire in a match against Staffordshire.

Wenlock Games round up

What a wonderful day. Many thanks to everyone involved with the Olympian Society, who organised everything so well.

Our own catering dream team did a sterling job (in pretty hot conditions) and raised a magnificent £480 plus for the club, so again, a huge thanks to everyone who helped out, or baked, and a special mention to Liz Townsley for all her hard work.

We had a magnificent turnout of younger athletes, with 85% of our U11s taking part, and although there were fewer older competitors, we enjoyed some success across the age groups:

Wilfred, Beth – gold, with Beth breaking the championship 800m record
Alex – silver and gold in the triple jump
Edith, Hannah – silver
Douglas, William, Charlie, Lois – bronze

The previous day Manali, Charlie (2nd) and Louix (1st) had all medalled in the junior biathlon.

We had a smattering of ‘older’ Olympians in the triathlon – Dean, Matt and Andy, showing that our coaches don’t just coach!

Sadly, there was no one from the club in the road race. If anyone would like an incentive for next year, there is a trophy for the highest placed Olympian. It could be you!

4th T and F match

The final match of the season is on Thursday 20 July at Shrewsbury track.

Invitation e mails have gone out. Please let team managers know as soon as possible if you can/ cannot attend.

The Shrewsbury track is at London Road Sports Centre (Shrewsbury College), SY2 6PR. There is plenty of parking. Events start at 6.45, so please arrive by 6.30 so we can finalise teams etc. Numbers and vests must be worn.

3rd SYAL T and F

It was a miserable night of drizzle at Shrewsbury on 29 June (as it was the previous year), so a big thank you to all our athletes and supporters who stuck it out in what felt more like cross country than track weather. A special mention to Alison Massey who turned up to track judge even although her daughter was unable to run because she didn’t want us to lose officials points.

There was, in all honesty, not much to cheer. Beth and Alex were our only winners on the night, and by my calculations all our teams finished outside the top three. It’s been a tough season on the track.

But there’s one last chance to turn things around. Invitation cards have gone out for the final SYAL match at Shrewsbury on 20 July. FTB!

Wenlock Olympian Games 2017

Good luck to all WO athletes competing in the various events next weekend.

The athletics timetable is now available online at http://www.wenlock-olympian-society.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Athletics-Timetable-2017.pdf

Catering
• We make and serve sandwiches, cakes and drinks to raise money for club funds. We need money for Presentation Evening, updating equipment, entry fees for competitions etc.
• This is our main fundraiser. We don’t ask you to buy raffle tickets, sponsor anyone or fundraise in any other way.
• We need you to help for 1-2 hours.
• The more people there are, the less time you will be needed for!
• You are able to leave to watch your child compete.

If you can help for an hour or two between 8 and 4, please let Liz or Ian know as soon as possible (liztownsley@hotmail.co.uk or iandadswell@f2s.com). Any contributions of cakes are also welcome, preferably sliced and cling filmed on Saturday or Sunday morning.

3rd SYAL meeting

Invitation cards have now gone out for the 3rd SYAL track and field meeting at Shrewsbury on Thursday 29 June.

Second SYAL Track and Field results

The second match of the season was held in glorious sunshine at Cosford on 25 May. Unfortunately it was a less glorious evening for our teams. Although we had some good individual winners – Ruari, John, Harriet and Toby – and a spectacular example of front running by Beth in the 1500m – our teams struggled. The U13B and U15G were 3rd on the night and retain those positions overall; and the U17W, depleted by injury and exams, were unlucky to lose their top spot. We finished the night in 4th overall, but significantly down by nearly 100 points.
The next fixture is at Shrewsbury on Thursday 29 June.

Before that a number of our older U13+ athletes will be competing in the Shropshire Schools Championships on 10 June – good luck to all of them!

SYAL track and field Cosford

The second league meeting takes place at Cosford on Thursday 25 May. Invitation cards have gone out and athletes should let team managers know as soon as possible if they can/ cannot attend.

The meeting starts at 6.45, but please arrive by 6.30 to ensure teams are organised. There is a proper stand at Cosford, so we meet there rather than by our tent. Numbers (A runners 5, B runners 55) and club vests must be worn.

Give yourself plenty of time for parking as there is limited space and it often gets very busy at the track.

The postcode for the track is WV7 3EX – simply follow directions for RAF Cosford Museum.

Shropshire County Champs

Once again we had a disappointing turnout from our athletes, with less than 20 competing (plus a few more who were representing their schools).

However, those who did compete were extremely successful:
Ophelia – U11G 150m silver, 600m bronze,
Lois – U11G 150m bronze,
Ruari – U13B hurdles silver, 1500m and high jump bronze,
James  – U13B discus silver,
Toby – U13B shot bronze,
Harriet  -U15G shot bronze,
Louix – 3000m silver
Alex – U17B triple and high jump silver
Robbie – 3000m bronze

Our county champions are:
Lois U11G cricket ball,
Rosie U11G long jump,
Beth U13G 1500m and 800m
Edith U15G 300m and 1500m

It was also great to see three relay teams competing – we were the only club apart from Telford to field any relay teams, and they deserve a special mention for their commitment, staying until after 5.30 to compete. Our U13B took gold, the U13G bronze.

Well done to everyone who took part, and to the fantastic support from their friends and families.
