First SYAL track and field

The first meeting of the SYAL track and field league will take place at Oakengates track, Telford on Thursday 26 April. Athletes should aim to arrive by 6.15 to make sure they are organised and registered. Clubs vests must be worn and you need to collect a number from team managers when you arrive. Events run to a timetable and you are free to leave when your event/s are finished.

Invitation cards were handed out at training today, and will be e mailed shortly. Please make sure you respond with your availability as soon as possible.

There are different events for each age group at each meeting, so even if you are not invited to the first, you may well get a chance later in the season.

NB For U17+ athletes the first YDL match is on Sunday 29 April. Please e mail Catriona (russandtrina@tiscali.co.uk) with availability.

The closing date for the County Championships is 30 April. All details and entry forms at http://www.telfordathleticclub.co.uk/track-field/county-championships

Distance update

After her win at the Midlands Champs, Beth has continued her fantastic season, winning the West Midlands Mini Marathon trials, finishing fourth in the English Nationals at Parliament Hill, and second at the mudfest which was the Intercounties at Loughborough. She has certainly managed to put Wenlock on the map, but we have had good representation at all the big races this spring.

Other successes include Manali and Louix who both had top 10 finishes in the British Schools Biathlon Champs, Edith who took silver in the Midlands 5k Champs, Emily, Lucy and Leonie with their 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the Ercall Hill races, and Imogen competing in what was I think her first half marathon at Ironbridge. Apologies if I’ve missed anyone out – we’re always happy to hear about individual successes.

Remember, you can keep your distance running up throughout the summer – there are 5k parkruns every Saturday, the TAC organised Sexarathon series for over 15s, junior fell races organised by Mercia Fell Runners and plenty of other fun runs and junior races at local events.

We still have the weather-delayed U11 XC Champs to look forward to and watch this space for an exciting new event…..!

Sportshall County Champs

The Sportshall County championships were held at Bridgnorth on Sat 24 March. Having cancelled training for the morning we were hoping for a good turnout of athletes and this was certainly true amongst the younger age groups. We also saw a number of Wenlock medals, so congratulations to:

Zoe and Daniel (bronze), Lois and Katie (2 bronzes), Douglas and Liam (silver), Shona bronze and gold in 2 lap), Leonie (bronze and gold in 3 lap), and Ruari (bronze, silver and gold in 3 lap).

Many thanks to everyone behind the scenes, particularly Claire Mansfield who handles all the entries.

Easter and summer training and membership renewal

There will be no training on Saturday 31 March and Tuesday 3 and 10 April.

Outdoor summer training will begin on Saturday 7 April at the following times

U11s 9.00-10.30 for all athletes

U13s+ 10-11.30 for all athletes

There will be no training on bank holiday weekends (Sat 5 and Sat 26 May), or on Tuesday 29 May. Training will end for the summer on Sat 14 July – some sessions will be organised during the summer holidays according to the availability of coaches.

Please remember that membership renewals are now due. You should have received yours either at training on Sat 17 March or through the post. If you have any queries regarding membership please email Vicki at membership@wenlockolympians.org.uk. Forms need to be returned by Tuesday 27 March.

Summer

March is a slack time for competitions, when we traditionally start to think about the summer track and field season.

Wenlock compete in the 4 match SYAL which runs from 6.45 on Thursday evenings during the summer term. The entry is by invitation, and like the sportshall it features different events on different evenings. The usual age groups apply, although the U11s compete as a joint team.

April 26th         Telford
May 24th           RAF Cosford
June 28th          Shrewsbury (Oswestry meet)
July 20th          Shrewsbury (Shrewsbury meet).

For our older athletes (U17+) we are now entering the YDL as part of a combined team with Bridgnorth (known as Border Olympians). This is an exciting new opportunity, both for club members who are too old for the SYAL, and for anyone who wants to do more competitions, try out new events, and likes a challenge. The YDL has 3 matches, on Sundays. They have a full day timetable which allows them to hold the full range of events. Full details can be found at http://www.ukydl.org.uk/index.html

29th April     Worcester
27th May     Kidderminster
1st July         Solihull

The Shropshire County Championships are held on 12 May. Details and entry forms at www.theorchard.clara.net

There are also a number of open competitions which anyone can enter as individuals. We would encourage athletes to do so, as competition is the best way to improve your PBs.

Sun 8 April Kidderminster Open
Sun 15 Tipton Games
Sun 15 Stoke Open
Tues 17 Worcester (and other meetings on Tuesdays throughout the term)
Sun 22 Birchfield Open
Details of all these can be found at www.powerof10.info (which is the best place to find information about all competitions)

Last but not least, there is of course the Wenlock Olympian Games, on Sunday 15 July.

Sportshall County Championships

The Shropshire sportshall championships will be held on the morning of Saturday 24 March at Oldbury Wells, Bridgnorth. This is an individual competition (entry form below) with limited events in each age group and medals available. Entry is £2 per event and the closing date is Monday 12 March.

There is no seating at Bridgnorth, so spectators might want to bring chairs!

Sportshall results

The final match of the season, at Oswestry on 11 February, certainly proved one thing: it ain’t over until the last relay race is run! It also showed that the important thing is to get your athletes out. We ended with three trophies for U11G, U13B and U15G – two of them largely unexpected – and these were three teams who had competed in every event in every match.

The U13B, some of whom took the trophy as U11s last year, have looked like champions from the outset, performing well in all the matches, and winning again at Oswestry.

The U11G have battled their way up, improving steadily, and they too came first at Oswestry. The trophy is a just reward, especially as they so nearly missed out on cross country medals before Christmas.

The U15G had seen their lead slip away, but a final victory in the relay – which for many of them was their last ever race in their last ever sportshall competition – gave them a win on the day and the shield.

The U15B also had a great day, coming first, but they had too much to do. In the end there was a three way split for first, with the title being decided on overall points won: they were just 8 points short. In sportshall terms, that’s one second place – definitely a case ‘if only’.

Again, we were desperately close in the boys overall trophy, losing out by just 7.5 points, which is nothing over the course of a whole season. The girls were third overall and we again just failed to get the club trophy.

We had a fantastic team of athletes and supporters at Oswestry and it’s huge thanks to them, and to everyone who turned out during the course of the  season. As ever, with sportshall, there’s a bittersweetness: we were so close achieving even greater success and we failed to get full teams out for all four matches. Those missed points always come back to haunt us.

Midlands XC Champion!

bethCongratulations to our Midlands Cross Country Champion, Beth, who stormed to victory in the U13G race. To my knowledge it’s a first for the club.

The Championships was held at Wollaton Park, Nottingham in Saturday 27 January, on an exceptionally muddy and challenging course. The Olympians were well represented with Lucy, Edith, Manali and Louix all competing, as well as Dean in the 12K senior race.

Good luck to all our runners at the Shropshire Schools XC at Oswestry this Saturday.
