Several times a year, our branch of the DLOC try to organise runs around the area, or just outside it. This being in the autumn, daylight is precious, so rather than a sightseeing route, a venue was fixed, with a simple journey to a hotel for a meal and general get-together. John Pochin's advice was most useful. Removing the plate which filled the space between engine and frame on the driver's side of the engine bay gave a huge improvement in cooling. The trip up the M6 proceeded at a steady 40 to 45 miles per hour, a speed not feasible before this modification.
The Lakeland Motor Museum is housed in a building which used to house an Ultramarine Blue factory - the stuff your grandmother used to put in with the washing. It now displays blue of another kind, a display about the Campbell family, who broke speed records in machines called "Bluebird". Donald Campbell's 1936 Bentley is on display too, painted in the same bright blue as the record-breaking vehicles.
Just down the road is the terminus of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, with steam trains running up to the southern end of Windermere.
After a pleasant day, we proceded to the Crooklands Hotel for an evening meal and fund-raising raffle.
